Assessment 02: Exceptional Answers
Due July 2025
Question 1
1.1 Five Practical Home-Based Opportunities to Promote Emergent Literacy
1. Storytelling Sessions: Parents can regularly tell or read stories aloud to their
children, which promotes vocabulary acquisition, phonemic awareness, and
comprehension (Whitehurst & Lonigan, 1998). This practice builds a strong
foundation for later decoding and comprehension skills.
2. Print-Rich Environment: Incorporating labels, posters, or children’s books
throughout the home provides visual access to print, helping children recognise
words and develop print awareness (Justice & Ezell, 2001). This environment
assumes that consistent exposure fosters familiarity with written language.
3. Interactive Dialogues: Engaging children in conversations during daily routines
(e.g., cooking or shopping) fosters expressive language and comprehension.
This promotes both receptive and expressive linguistic capabilities.
4. Writing and Drawing Corners: Creating a dedicated space with crayons, paper,
and pencils encourages scribbling and emergent writing behaviours (Sulzby &
Teale, 1985). These early writing attempts reflect the child’s developing
understanding of symbolic representation.
5. Singing Songs and Rhymes: Singing rhymes enhances phonological memory,
auditory discrimination, and rhythm of speech, foundational to reading and writing
development (Goswami, 2001). The musical elements support memorisation and
auditory learning.
