Question 1: Domains of Development
1.1 Understanding the Domains of Development
1.1.1 Cognitive Domain
The cognitive domain refers to the processes involved in thinking, learning, problem-
solving, and understanding. It encompasses intellectual skills such as attention,
memory, language acquisition, and reasoning (Papalia et al., 2021). In Piaget’s theory,
this domain is central to how children move through stages of development from
sensorimotor to formal operational thought (Study Guide, Unit 1, Section 1.3.1, p. 9).
1.1.2 Physical Domain
The physical domain includes changes in the body and brain, such as growth in height
and weight, development of fine and gross motor skills, and neurological maturation.
This domain also considers how health, nutrition, and physical activity influence a child's
development (Santrock, 2019). The study guide details these aspects in Unit 1, Section
1.3.2 (p. 11).
1.1.3 Social Domain
The social domain involves the development of relationships, understanding social
norms, empathy, and cooperation. It includes the formation of friendships and social
identity (Berk, 2020). Erikson’s psychosocial theory, particularly the stage of "industry
vs. inferiority" for 6–12-year-olds, addresses how children engage socially (Study Guide,
Unit 2, Section 2.1.2, p. 17).
