Hitlers remilitarisation of the Rhineland
WHAT HAPPENED
● In 1936 Hitler stationed troops into the Rhineland ( A strip of german
land bordering france)
● Hitler was breaking the demilitarisation term of the treaty of versailles
● He used a small legion and there was no opposition


WHY WAS THIS ALLOWED TO HAPPEN
● In 1936, the League of nations (main peace-keeping body) and its main
members Britain and France were pre-occuppied with the Italian
invasion of Abyssinia. The large scale military invasion looked to be a
huge threat to world peace as Italy was using violent military action to
try and invade Abyssinia. THE LEAGUES ATTENTION WAS
DIVERTED IN TO TRYING TO END THE WAR

● No french leader was prepared for a war. France was on the brink of an
election in 1936, so no leader was ready to take decisive action and
plunge France into a war. This led to a lack of action being taken as in
France there was a lack of political will to take action against Germany

● Britain were sympathetic in parts and didnt want to upset germany.
Britain had felt that many of the terms of the treaty of versailles were
overly harsh. For example in 1935 they introduced the anglo german
naval agreement, reversing the treaties terms over germanys navy in
earnest. Britains sympathies, as well as a desire to keep a strong
