DIALECT: ‘See you anon’
GATSBY: “some heightened sensitivity to the promises of life”, “But I didn’t call to
him, for he gave a sudden intimation that he was content to be alone - he
stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way.”
Dust motif - “what foul dust floated in the wake of his dreams” (wake vs dream
= jux) - that caused his downfall (material problems, the things that stopped
Daisy from being with him). “romantic readiness”
Nick’s biography: Had a dog until he ran away and now just has an old dodge and
a Finnish woman (parallel to Gatsby - Klipspringer and the wise man)
SETTING: “To the wingless a more interesting phenomenon is their dissimilarity in
every particular except shape and size” - regarding the poor who see Daisy and
Gatsby as objects of wealth who shouldn’t have to worry about their mental
health.
TOM: sought to initiate “turbulence”. “ as if his absence quickened something
within her… Her voice is flowing and singing”
TOM + DAISY HOUSE: “French windows… wide open to the warm sun” (Gatsby’s
house as a paper pop-up mimick). “wine-coloured rug”, “divan” name of sofa
Jordan was on
ADVERB: “The lawn… ran towards the beach for a quarter of a mile”
(Dust comes from Daisy mouth as she “whispers ‘Listen’”)

“As if her heart was trying to come out to be concealed in one of those breathless
throwing words. Then suddenly she threw her napkin on the table and excused
herself.” - that is a motif here of her getting distracted before ignoring it.*
Structural pattern throughout following this: “The murmur trembled on the verge
of coherence, sank down, mounted excitedly, and then ceased altogether” – the
pebble collided with the waters, jumped excitedly and sunk heavily to the
bottom” – wish? = rewrite
“‘Well, I’ve had a very bad time Nick, and I’m pretty cynical about everything.’
Evidently, she had reason to be. I waited but she didn’t say anymore, and after a
moment I will return rather feebly to the subject of her daughter.”*
“‘To be continued’, she said, tossing the magazine on the table, ‘In our very next
issue.’” – CH2 continuation of Mrytle.
Daisy about nick and Jordan-IRONY -“You know - lock you up accidentally in linen

breathed in.
Dr. J. Eckleburg - represent the eyes of capitalism and consumerism. “no face,
but, instead, from a pair of yellow spectacles which pass over a non-existent
nose” - the yellow spectacles = Gatsby’s car. “‘Terrible place isn’t it,’ said Tom,
exchanging a frown with Dr Eckleberg” – Owl-rimmed glasses of man.
WILSON: “Wilson… went toward… mingling with the cement colour of the walls”*,
“anaemic”, but heart fulfilled with myrtle. Something about Wilson’s thirst - “saw
us a damp gleam of hope sprung into his light blue eyes” - link eye colour to sky
and dreams, “Then she wet her lips, and… spoke to her husband”. Wilson
borrowed someone’s “‘best suit’” to marry Mrytle bless - causing her to “‘beat
the band all afternoon’”. Ash “veiled” over Wilson as dust does to Gatsby. “so
dumb he doesn’t know he’s alive” – veil (marriage) = there’s no hope = fate is
set in stone.
SETTING: “The only building in site was a small block of the yellow brick…
contiguous to absolutely nothing” – constant remarks to “yellow” = myrtle
turned to nothingness by a yellow car.
MYRTLE: “ as if the nerves in her body were continuously smouldering”*, “dress
