Elizabeth’s Final Years

Religion –
 Religious Situation was favourable by the end of Elizabeth’s
reign. The Level of Popular Catholicism has declined, Puritanism
had faded, and Separatism had disappeared.
 England can be seen as a much more religiously unified country
by the end of the reign.

Economic issues –
 The 1590’s were difficult years, mainly due to 4 successive
poor harvests between 1594-97. Agricultural prices rose by a
third. Outbreaks of plague were made worse by the scarcity of
food.
 Poor Laws of 1598 and 1601 seem to reflect the scale of the
problem. The Privy Council began to fear social unrest,
however no large-scale popular rebellions occurred in this
time. The greatest evidence for social unrest is the food riots in
London in 1595, and in East Anglia in 1596-97.

Essex Rebellion –
 By 1590’s, Elizabeth was less able to handle factionalism.
 Essex attempted a rebellion following a loss of influence after
failures in Ireland, and the loss of all his monopolies.
 Despite failing completely, the rebellion did show the extent to
which the Queen had lost popularity.

Succession –
