Elizabeth’s Final Years
Religion –
Religious Situation was favourable by the end of Elizabeth’s
reign. The Level of Popular Catholicism has declined, Puritanism
had faded, and Separatism had disappeared.
England can be seen as a much more religiously unified country
by the end of the reign.
Economic issues –
The 1590’s were difficult years, mainly due to 4 successive
poor harvests between 1594-97. Agricultural prices rose by a
third. Outbreaks of plague were made worse by the scarcity of
food.
Poor Laws of 1598 and 1601 seem to reflect the scale of the
problem. The Privy Council began to fear social unrest,
however no large-scale popular rebellions occurred in this
time. The greatest evidence for social unrest is the food riots in
London in 1595, and in East Anglia in 1596-97.
Essex Rebellion –
By 1590’s, Elizabeth was less able to handle factionalism.
Essex attempted a rebellion following a loss of influence after
failures in Ireland, and the loss of all his monopolies.
Despite failing completely, the rebellion did show the extent to
which the Queen had lost popularity.
