Study Guide.
High-Quality CPR
Begin with 30 compressions to 2 breaths for a victim who is unresponsive, is making gasping sounds/is
not breathing, and does not have a pulse.
Rate of Compressions
100-120 compressions per minute for victims of any age group.
Complete Chest Recoil
Allows blood to flow into the heart; incomplete recoil reduces the filling of the heart between
compressions and reduces blood flow created by chest compressions.
Depth of Compressions for Adult
2 inches or 5 cm.
Depth of Compressions for Child
2 inches or 5 cm.
1-Rescuer Infant CPR Ratio
30 compressions to 2 breaths.
Six Universal Steps for Operating an AED
1. Power on the AED 2. Attach AED pads to the victim's bare chest 3. 'Clear' the victim and allow the AED
to analyze the rhythm 4. If AED advises a shock, it will tell you to clear the victim 5. If no shock is needed,
immediately begin CPR 6. After 5 cycles or 2 minutes of CPR, the AED will prompt you to repeat steps 3
& 4.
Effective Bag-Mask Ventilation
Squeeze the bag to give breaths (1 second each) while watching for chest rise.
Victim with Hairy Chest
Shave the chest with a razor or apply the first set of pads, quickly remove the pads and hair, then apply a
new set of pads.
Victim Submerged in Water
1. Pull the victim out of the water 2. Wipe the chest before attaching the AED pads if the chest is
covered in water 3. Use the AED after quickly wiping the chest if the victim is lying on snow or in a small
puddle.
