Question 1: Case Study – Rural School Context (15 Marks)
You are a newly appointed Physical Education (PE) teacher in your chosen phase at a
rural high school where there are limited facilities and minimal equipment. Learners
have not previously been exposed to structured PE classes. Based on Study Units 1,
2, 6, and 12 answer the following:
a. Explain how you would introduce the value and purpose of PE to the
learners and staff.
As a newly appointed PE teacher, I would introduce PE by creating excitement,
understanding, and appreciation for movement. I would Talk about the benefits of PE
in a fun and simple way:
Explain that PE is not just sport it is about learning how to move, stay healthy, and
enjoy being active.
Emphasise that movement can help learners build confidence, express themselves,
and develop social skills (Study Unit 1.5).
Explain the purpose and goals of PE:
PE helps learners improve fitness, strength, and flexibility.
It teaches teamwork, self-discipline, and respect through structured play (Study Unit
1.1.1). It supports mental health, improves concentration, and reduces stress (Study
Unit 1.5). Include staff members in short PE activities Invite teachers to join a fun
session to experience the value of PE.
Explain how PE links with other subjects like Life Orientation.
Share the long-term impact of PE
Encourage the idea of “fitness for life” (Study Unit 12) being healthy now and in the
future.
