a) A dictionary activity (see Unit 2), for vocabulary and dictionary skills
development AFTER the class read or listened to your selected text
This could be used later in the same lesson or in another lesson. You do not have to use the vocabulary items you have
selected for pre-teaching.
NAME OF ACTIVITY: Dictionary Speed Reading
TIME: 15 Minutes
AIMS: Use a dictionary to find the meaning, pronunciation and parts of speech of vocabulary they
have been pre taught
TEACHER'S INSTRUCTIONS:
Divide the class into 2 groups. Place 2 dictionaries on opposite sides of the classroom. 1 dictionary
will be for team A and the other for team B. Hand 1 worksheet to each team. 1 team member from
each team must go to their allocated dictionary with the worksheet in hand and find one of the
words and write down the definition and pronunciation. They must then return to their team and
hand over the worksheet to the next student who will then go find the next word and so on. The
team to fill in all the definitions and pronunciations first, wins. Allow 2 minutes at the end for each
group to go over all the definitions and pronunciations as a team. Correct any pronunciation
where necessary.
