Hospital Examination
A1. Hospital Selection
I chose OSF Saint Elizabeths Medical Center in Ottawa, Illinois,61350 from
the AHD website. (American Hospital Directory, 2023).
A2. Personal significance of the chosen hospital
I chose OSF Saint Elizabeths Medical Center because it was the first facility
to offer me a supervisory nursing/inpatient services position after my 27-
year-old facility closed its doors. It is also my current employer of two years.
It has allowed me to show my true potential as a unit leader. I hope to
resume my employment for many more years.
A3. Type of Facility
OSF Saint Elizabeths Medical Center is an acute care hospital part of
the OSF Healthcare system.
It offers various medical services, including emergency care, surgical,
maternity, orthopedic, nuclear medicine, outpatient, and specialty services,
such as interventional radiology, inpatient dialysis, and outpatient infusion
services. As a community hospital, it serves as the primary healthcare
provider for Ottawa and the surrounding areas, focusing on delivering both
inpatient and outpatient care across different medical disciplines.
A4. Ownership Structure
OSF Saint Elizabeths Medical Center works under private, voluntary, not-for-
profit control as part of the faith-based organization. OSF Saint Elizabeths is
exempt from federal income taxes. This tax-exempt status is granted to not-
for-profit hospitals that provide community benefits. OSF Healthcare
manages it and adheres to guidelines set by the Catholic Church, which
affects its ethical and operational decisions, particularly regarding patient
care and community service. The two other types of control /ownership for
healthcare organizations are for-profit & government-owned.
For-profit healthcare organizations require returns on their investments.
They focus on making a profit for the organization’s stakeholders. The
organization must focus on reducing costs by improving care efficiency.
The taxpayer's money funds government-owned healthcare facilities. They
do not have investors.
