Understand how a person-centred approach builds positive relationships in health, social
care, or childcare environments.
What is a person-centred approach?
A person-centred approach is when healthcare professionals work together with service
users. This involves caring for service users not just for the condition but adapting the
service to fit their wants and needs. This also involves respecting the views and values they
have for themselves. To know this, service providers have to get to know their patient as a
person and involve them in decisions for them. Person – centred approach means that the
service user is technically an equal partner in planning their care. This does not mean
whatever they want they can get but they can be understood by service users and their
preferences are taken into consideration. It can involve a plan to suit an individual but may
include compromises. Person centred care is important because it helps service users get a
more comfortable experience and feel like they are important in the eyes of the service.
Service users will also be able to feel confident in the service because you are maintaining
their dignity and independence as well. As a service, it helps patients to have positive health
attitudes and service users such as patients are more likely to stick to plans for treatment if
they feel respected and involved in the service.
There are many strategies that ensure person centred approach, but professionals should
ensure they develop strategies that consider the eight person- centred values. These values
are individuality, choice, privacy, dignity, respect, rights, independence, and partnership.
Individuality means that each person is catered to their own wishes, needs, choices and
beliefs. It is not a one service for all when it comes to providing support and care. Choice
means that individuals can be supported so they are able to make their own choices about
their care. They should be allowed to receive information in a way that they can understand
and make the right choices for themselves. For people who can not express their needs in
words, service users have to find another way to communicate. Everyone has a right to
privacy and a private space when they want it. It can include having privacy when personal
issues are being discussed but it can also include service providers not discussing service
users’ private matters to other service providers unless it is on a need to know basis. Dignity
means treating an individual with respect and valuing their beliefs. This includes having a
positive attitude to providing dignified care. Another way to providing dignified care is to
not make assumptions about the individual and how they wish to be treated. Respecting an
individual means showing that individual that they are important and have importance as a
person. Respecting someone also means respecting their opinions, even if you do not agree
with them. Individuals that are given care and support are allowed to have the same rights
that they had before they started receiving care and support. Every individual has the right
to speak their mind and the right to be protected from harm. A service provider has to make
sure an individual’s rights are respected. Independence means looking at what activities
what they can do by themselves. Service providers should not do every task for the service
users because it is quicker but they should support them in tasks they can do because
having independence helps the service users believe they have a sense of control in their
own lives. Partnership is based around the service user that is being supported and the
