UNIT 1: GLOBALIZATION & IDENTITY
Globalization:
The process by which the world's citizens are becoming increasingly connected and interdependent through
trade, communication, travel, media, and technology.
Identity:
The traits, beliefs, values, culture, and characteristics that define who a person or group is.
Ways Globalization Affects Identity:
- Access to global pop culture
- Influence of global brands
- Loss or revival of cultural traditions
Key Terms:
- Cultural Revitalization: Bringing back suppressed traditions.
- Hybridization: Blending cultures to create something new.
- Homogenization: Cultures becoming more similar.
- Acculturation: Adapting traits from another culture.

Historical Globalization:
Period of global expansion through colonization (1400s to 1900s).
Key Events:
- 1492: Columbus arrives in Americas
- Colonization of North America, Africa, India, and Asia
- Transatlantic Slave Trade
- Residential Schools (Canada, 1800s-1996)
Effects on Indigenous Peoples:
- Loss of land, culture, language
- Introduction of diseases
