ANSWER TWO QUESTIONS
Question 1
Examine the evolution of urban systems, highlighting the significant
transformations attributed to economic, social, governance, technological and
infrastructural changes. Focus your analysis on the three pivotal phases of urban
development and expansion in the contemporary era. (50 marks)
Introduction
Urban systems are complex, dynamic networks of settlements that
evolve in response to changing economic, social, political, and
environmental conditions. The contemporary evolution of urban
systems can be traced through three major historical phases:
Industrial Urbanism, Post-Industrial/Suburban Expansion, and
Contemporary Global Urbanism (Smart/Networked Cities). Each
phase is characterized by distinct drivers of change—including
economic restructuring, technological advancements, governance
reforms, social transformations, and infrastructural development.
Understanding these shifts helps us contextualize urban challenges
and anticipate future urban trends.
Phase 1: Industrial Urbanism (Mid-18th Century to Early 20th
Century)
