Quality Literature Piece: Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey
A quality piece of literature is Make Way for Ducklings by Robert
McCloskey. The story is about Mr. and Mrs. Mallard, two ducks, who are
looking for a safe place to raise ducklings in Boston. After exploring many
different locations Mr. and Mrs. Mallard agree to raise a family in the Boston
Public Garden. Once the ducklings have hatched the family journeys through
the city and is helped back to their new home by a kind police officer.
Make Way for Ducklings has many elements that make it a quality
piece of literature. The themes in this book are family, safety, exploration,
and community, all of which are great themes for children. There is a clear
plot to the book that is engaging and has a conflict that is solved in a
positive way without being overwhelming. The ducks, the main characters, in
the story are anthropomorphized yet still behave like ducks. Policeman
Micheal is a kind human who represents compassion and civic duty. Because
the book is set in a real place, Boston, it has a documentary feel while also
being accessible and whimsical. Make Way for Ducklings is written in third
