QUESTION 1: CASE STUDY ON EMILY (25 marks)
1.1 Why does Emily feel pressure to perform well at school? (2)
Emily feels pressure because she is in a school where many learners are very focused
on doing well, and there are a lot of activities that keep her very busy. Her parents also
expect her to do well in school and take part in many things. All these expectations can
make her feel like she must always be perfect, which can become too much for a child.
1.2 How does Emily’s peers’ focus on material wealth and social status affect
her? (2)
Her classmates care a lot about fancy things like clothes, phones, and being popular.
This can make Emily feel like she has to “fit in” by being like them. If she doesn't have
the same expensive items or social status, she may feel left out, not good enough, or
anxious about being accepted.
1.3 What is social anxiety and how might it impact Emily’s daily life at school? (2)
Social anxiety means being very nervous or scared in social situations, especially when
talking to others or being around groups. For Emily, this might make her avoid talking in
class, feel scared during group work, or worry too much about what others think. It could
even stop her from enjoying school.
1.4 How do the extracurricular activities Emily’s parents expect her to participate
in contribute to her stress? (2)
When Emily has to do many extra activities like ballet or coding classes, it can take
away her time to relax or play. This can make her tired and overwhelmed. Instead of
feeling free after school, she may feel like she’s always working or performing, which
adds more pressure.
1.5 Why is it important that Emily has time to play and relax? (2)
Play and relaxation help children rest their minds and bodies. When Emily plays, she
can be creative, have fun, and express her feelings. It also helps her manage stress
