BIOTECH 7001 – Drug Design and Development
Real World Drug Discovery: Essay
Overview: In this task you will link a real-world drug-discovery project to the
steps of the drug development pipeline you have learned about in lectures
and present your findings in a written essay.
Weighting: 25%
Due Date: 5pm Friday, May 20th. Submit
via Turnitin on MyUni
Format: A formal essay of 2500 words,
correctly referenced. The bibliography is
not included in the word count.
Instructions: Each student will select a journal article from the available list
(up to six students may select each paper). Using this article as the basis for
your research, identify how the published work fits into the drug development
pathway and discuss the significance of the findings and their potential to
address the target disease.
Specifically, you will need to:
1) Briefly (<~100 words) describe the disease and clinical need.
2) Explain how the drug target was identified and the evidence that this is
a promising target.
3) Describe the method used to discover hit compounds, including
information about the library and assay/s used.
4) Outline the steps taken to develop the hit into a lead compound.
5) Discuss what preclinical data has been obtained (in the current work,
or subsequent papers) in preparation for clinical trials.
6) Discover if the lead compound, or related molecule, has been taken to
clinical trials, and if so, what were the results?
7) Based on the data you present, conclude with an argument as to how
likely it is that a registered drug will result from this project, and how
long you predict this may take. Give reasons for your predictions.
