2.1 The term “racism”

Definition:

Racism refers to the belief that some races are inherently superior or inferior to others. It
involves discriminatory behavior, prejudice, or antagonism directed against individuals or groups
based on their race or ethnicity. Racism often manifests in social, economic, and political

, inequalities, and can be systemic or individual. It is rooted in historical power imbalances and
continues to influence social dynamics today.

Summary of the incident:

The racial incident involving Nobuntu Mkhize was reported in News24 on 6 May 2024.
According to the report, Mkhize, an SABC employee, allegedly used racially offensive language
and physically assaulted FlySafair cabin crew during a flight from Cape Town to Johannesburg.
Passengers captured the incident on camera, and the footage circulated widely on social media
platforms such as Twitter (now X) and Facebook.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) expressed concern over the incident
and indicated that Mkhize may be brought before the Equality Court for her conduct. Mkhize
held a position of influence as a broadcaster associated with a national media institution, which
further amplified the public’s reaction to the event. The footage sparked outrage and reignited
public discourse on racism, accountability, and professional conduct in South Africa.
