• A- Airway
• B- Breathing
• C- Circulation
• D- Disability (decline in neuro status )
• E- Examine/Environment: assess the patient, remove their clothing to assess the body but
make sure you prevent hypothermia (cover the patient with a blanket). ( respiratory failure,
cardiac )
- Pneumonia: How to we treat it?
• Nursing Management- increase fluid intake, O2 therapy, physiotherapy, rest and activity,
ventilation management. HOB up
• Diagnostic testing- CXR, blood gasses, thoracentesis or bronchoscopy, sputum culture.
- COPD: How do we treat it?
• Nursing Management- medications, O2 BE CAREFUL!!, illuminate
Triggers, patient education, abgs, IV fluids or oral corticosteroids, possible intubation or
assisted intubation.
• Medications: anticholinergics are most effective for COPD (affect the muscles arounds the
large airways, preventing them from tightening).
Nebulizers like Atrovent FHA, SPIRIVA (long-acting inhalers).
• Teach: Rinse mouth out after use of inhalers, Educate on purse lip breathing.
