1) Identify the TWO language skills that can be acquired after a
language is learned. (2 Marks)
The two language skills that can be acquired after learning a language are reading
and writing.

2) Explain, in your own words, the difference between receptive
skills and productive skills in communication AND provide an
example of a receptive skill AND a productive skill. (4 Marks)
Receptive skills involve receiving and interpreting messages, while productive skills
are about expressing and producing messages. Receptive skills focus on
understanding what others say or write, and productive skills deal with speaking or
writing your own ideas. An example of a receptive skill is listening, while an example
of a productive skill is speaking.

3) According to Nunan (2001:23), hearing, attending and
understanding are three stages in the listening process. In your
own words, explain EACH of these stages in one sentence. (6
Marks)

• Hearing is the first stage where sounds reach the ears, but no focus is given
to them yet.

• Attending is when the listener begins to pay attention to specific sounds or
words among many.

• Understanding involves making sense of what was heard and linking it to
meaning or previous knowledge.

4) The goal of critical listening differs from the goal of informational
listening. Discuss in TWO sentences the difference in the goals. (4
