Antidiabetics/Biguanides
→ Metformin
Indications → Type 2 Diabetes
MOA → ⬇glucose production in liver, ⬇intestinal
absorption of glucose, ⬆insulin sensitivity
Side Effects → GI upset, abdominal bloating, nausea,
cramping, metallic taste, lactic acidosis
Nursing Considerations → Hold metformin prior to
procedures requiring contrast dye and for 48 hrs
after the procedure. Monitor for signs of lactic
acidosis (diarrhea, dizziness, hypotension,
bradycardia, muscle pain, weakness)
Patient Education → Take with a meal; Do not
consume alcohol

→ Glipizide
Indications → Type 2 diabetes
MOA → ⬆insulin release from pancreas
Side Effects → Hypoglycemia, photosensitivity, GI
upset, rash, weight gain
Nursing Considerations → Contraindications; Known
sulfa allergy.
Patient Education → Take 30 minutes before a meal.
Do not consume alcohol. Wear sunscreen
