RSE4801 ASSSIGNMENT 2 2025 DUE: 3 JULY 2025 Section A: Short Answer Questions 1. Define what ‘context’ means in research. (Study Unit, Learning Unit 2.2) In research, context refers to the various conditions and environments that influence and shape the research process, including social, political, economic, historical, institutional, and personal factors. These contexts can be categorized into microcontexts e.g., classrooms or individual relationships, meso-contexts e.g., schools, communities, or government policies, and macro-contexts e.g., global trends such as neoliberalism or capitalism. Importantly, context is not just a background setting in which research occurs, it is also shaped by the research itself. This means research both responds to and creates context. As such, researchers must reflect critically on how their own values, positionalities, and practices interact with these contexts

Section A: Short Answer Questions

1. Define what ‘context’ means in research.

(Study Unit, Learning Unit 2.2)

In research, context refers to the various conditions and environments that influence
and shape the research process, including social, political, economic, historical,
institutional, and personal factors. These contexts can be categorized into micro-
contexts e.g., classrooms or individual relationships, meso-contexts e.g., schools,
communities, or government policies, and macro-contexts e.g., global trends such as
neoliberalism or capitalism.

Importantly, context is not just a background setting in which research occurs, it is also
shaped by the research itself. This means research both responds to and creates
context. As such, researchers must reflect critically on how their own values,
positionalities, and practices interact with these contexts

2. Based on the literature you have read, explain in some detail why
understanding ‘context’ in research is important.

, Understanding context in research is crucial because context shapes every part of the
research process from how we formulate our research questions to how we interpret our
findings. Based on the literature you have read, particularly the insights from Learning
Unit 2.2 and Smith’s account in Unit 1, context matters for the following key reasons:

Research is situated and personal

As Smith describes, research is not a neutral or purely technical activity. It is a personal
journey deeply connected to a researcher’s values, beliefs, and social background such
as race, class, gender, and ideology. This personal dimension of research means that
the researcher is influenced by the contexts in which they live and work, and these
contexts inform what they choose to study and how they choose to study it.

Multiple layers of context affect research: Context is not limited to one level

Micro-contexts e.g., personal experiences, classroom interactions
Meso-contexts e.g., school policies, community issues, local economy
Macro-contexts e.g., national policy, global trends, political systems like neoliberalism

These layers interact and influence each other. For example, while South Africa may be
a constitutional democracy at the macro-level, a classroom at the micro-level may not
reflect democratic practices. Therefore, understanding these multiple layers helps
researchers recognize how broader social forces impact individual settings and vice
versa.

Research does not occur in a vacuum. The educational, political, economic, and cultural
context influences what problems are seen as important, what knowledge is valued, and
what methods are considered acceptable. Without a good understanding of the context,
