For those of you who want to study sonography, this is the personal statement that has helped my friends and colleagues get an interview. Good luck.

I have been working as a Diagnostic Radiographer in the Imaging Directorate since
2005. My duties involved working with the health care team in the A/E room,
theatres, conducting Quality Assurance tests, and operating on a rotational system
that covered weekend and night shifts. Working in these diverse roles has enabled
me to become an effective team member within the profession.

I regularly attend continuous development programmes set out by the Hospital Trust
to help further my knowledge and understanding. I keep an up to date portfolio of
seminars attended to which I can refer back to when needed.

I have done presentation on ultrasound modality to the radiography students on
clinical practice. To further improve these skills, I took a course in advanced mentor
training at the University of Cumbria.

During my annual appraisal i expressed my interest in studying ultrasound and my
line manager was kind enough to provide some flexibility at work that would allow me
to observe sonographers at work. I spent several times with both sonographer and
student sonographers who allowed me to practice some dating scans, Anomaly
scans and growth scans. The experience was invaluable and enabled me to observe
how sonographers work and interact with patients. I kept a log-book of all the scans i
did and wrote a reflective piece on communicating bad news to patients. This whole
process further proved to me that sonography was exactly what i wanted to do. I fully
appreciated the level of skill, knowledge, and ability to work under pressure within
the department.

I am involved as an assistant youth leader at my local church where duties include
arranging programmes for the church, and coordinating activities for the young
people in the community, such as five a side football match competitions. For two
years we conducted concerts and managed to raise enough funds for a trip to
Denmark.

To stay healthy, I enjoy playing in a seven a side football competition at a local
sports hall.

I have had the opportunity to work with sonographers within the hospital and have
also attended ultrasound training courses to further enhance my knowledge of the
speciality. Having observed sonographers role in medical imaging, I am very much
interested to further enhance my skills by training as a sonographer.
