INTRODUCTION TO SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT
INFORMATION SYSTEM (IS):
– A set of interrelated components that collect, manipulate, store, and disseminate
data and information and provide feedback to meet an objective
BUSINESSES:
– Can use information systems to increase revenues, improve customer service and
reduce costs
RESOURCES:
Hardware; Software; Database; People
PROCEDURES:
Every system function under a set of rules that govern the system to accomplish the
defined goal of the system. Strategies, policies, guidelines
DATA / INFORMATION:
Inputs are converted into the required output. Output must conform to the customer's
expectations. Data (Raw facts) ; Information (Collection of facts organized and
processed in such a way that they have value beyond the individual facts); ; Knowledge
(Awareness and understanding of a set of information and the ways information can be
made useful)
PROCESSES:
Set of logically related tasks performed to achieve a defined outcome
INTERMEDIATE DATA:
Various processes “process” a system's Inputs before it is transformed into Output
What is system development?
Systems development is the process of defining, designing, testing, and implementing a
new software application or program. It could include the internal development of
customized systems, the creation of database systems, or the acquisition of third party
developed software.
Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC)
Systems development could be seen as the simple process of writing programs to solve
the needs of the user. Unfortunately, the user knows what he wants but has no technical
expertise while the programmer understands the computer but not the user
environment. This communication gap between the customer and the service provider
