To best assure that the patient will not contaminate the medication during the administration
process, you first instruct him to avoid touching any part of his eye with the medication
dropper during instillation.
To ensure proper administration of the otic (ear) medication, you instruct the patient to 1.
tilt his head with the affected ear upward to facilitate self-administration.
2. keep his head tilted for 2 to 3 minutes after instillation to prevent drainage out into the
pinna.
3. massage the tragus of the ear gently to help the medication move down the ear canal.
To minimize your patient's risk of aspiration, you initially elevate the head of the bed to at
least 30º.
To best ensure that the NG tube is correctly placed prior to instilling the patient's medications,
you 1. aspirate 5 to 10 mL of fluid from the NG tube to check for an appropriate pH.
2. examine the outside of the NG tube for movement of the ink mark away from the naris.
To facilitate the administration of the patient's levothyroxine (Synthroid), you crush and
dissolve it in 15 to 30 mL of sterile water.
To administer the prescribed 500 mg, you pour how many mL of liquid from the bottle labeled,
"levofloxacin (Levaquin) 25 mg/ml"? 20 mL
Between administering the various medications, you flush the NG tube with 15 to 30 mL of
sterile water.
