1. The passage below describes the process of selective breeding.
(a) Complete the passage by writing a suitable word in each blank space. (3)
Selective breeding is a process used to produce organisms with ________________ characteristics. By
mating individuals with these characteristics, their ________________ will inherit them.
For example, wheat has been selectively bred for thousands of years to increase its ________________.
Chickens have been selectively bred over generations to produce larger eggs.
A farmer has recently developed a new breed of chicken called the Golden Layer, which is known for
consistently producing large eggs. All eggs contain protein.
(b) Describe a test that the farmer could use to confirm that his eggs contain protein. Include the
expected result if protein is present. (2)

,The farmer wanted to find out more about the nutrients in his new Golden Layer eggs compared to
regular eggs. He sent both types of eggs to a lab for testing. A graph of the results is shown below.
The lab discovered that the Golden Layer eggs contained much higher levels of protein compared to
regular eggs.
(c) Calculate the percentage increase in protein content from the regular eggs to the Golden Layer
eggs. (3)

2. Rust fungi are a type of parasitic organism that infect plants.
Rust fungi secrete enzymes that degrade the cell walls found in the leaves of plants. This enables
them to penetrate and feed on plant tissues.
