Hand Hygiene - Performed before patient care, after patient care, after removing gloves,
before any aseptic procedure. Wash hands with soap and water when visibly soiled or any
time you want.
A moist towel and ABHR - Can replace replace hand washing when water is not available.
Alcohol Based Hand Rub (ABHR) - The preferred method of hand hygiene in a health care
setting.
ABHR must be rubbed into hands until it's dry - do not wipe excess away.
ABHR must contain 70-90% alcohol as the active ingredient.
Steps to Hand Washing - 1. Turn on tap
2. Wet hands
3. Apply soap and lather for minimum 15 seconds
4. Rinse from wrist ti finger tips
5. Dry with paper towel
6. Turn tap off with paper towel
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - What you WEAR to keep you safe. PPE is not
necessary when you are taking a pulse or palpating on intact skin.
Gloves - Worn as minimum protection. Cuffs of gowns are tucked into gloves.
Gown - Worn when risk of body fluid spray-cough, sneeze.
Eyewear (goggles/face shields) - Protective eyewear worn when risk of body fluid spray-
cough, sneeze. Reusable eyewear must be changed between patients.
, Mask - Worn when risk of inhaling body fluid spray-cough, sneeze. Mask is fit tested and
must be worn within 2 meters of infected.
N95 Respirator Mask - Worm when risk of inhaling airborne particles-TB. Also worn when
health care worker is exposed to an infectious disease they do not have immunity to (i.e.,
chicken pox, shingles).
Donning PPE - Gown, mask or N95, goggles or face shield, gloves
Doffing PPE - Gloves, gown, wash hands, goggles or face shield, Mask or N95
Engineering Controls - What you USE to keep you safe. (sharps container, biohazard bags,
biosafety cabinet, plexiglas barrier, ventilation, hand hygiene, eye wash stations)
Work Practice Controls - Things you DO as part of your job to keep you safe. Combination of
PPE and engineering controls plus good housekeeping practices.
Administrative Controls - What your EMPLOYER does to assist you to work safely. (i.e.,
provide PPE supplies, training and education, infection prevention and control policies,
adequate staffing, sick leave policies)
