managerial control over land used for agricultural production

PROFESSIONAL (APPLICATOR) - a pesticide applicator that applies pesticides to land they
do not own, rent/lease or have managerial control for monetary compensation. Also refers to
an applicator that promotes, presents or advertises themselves or their business as pesticide
applicators.

ACTIVATOR - an adjuvant added to a pesticide to increase its toxicity

PROPELLANT - the inert ingredient in self pressurized products that forces the active
ingredient from the container. Propellants are often used in over-the counter flying insect
control pesticides.

ACUTE TOXICITY - The capacity of a pesticide to cause injury from a single exposure. LD50
and LC50 are common indicators of the degree of acute toxicity.

RCRA-The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. - The federal law regulating the
transport, storage, treatment and disposal of hazardous wastes.

Adjuvant - A substance added to a pesticide to improve its effectiveness or safety, also
called an additive. Examples: Penetrants, spreader stickers and wetting agents

REENTRY INTERVAL - The length of time following an application of a pesticide when a
person is required to wear protective clothing and equipment in a treated field.

, ADULTERATED PESTICIDE - A pesticide that does not conform to the professed standard
or quality documented on its label or labeling.

AEROSOL - A pesticide that is sprayed in very fine to extremely fine droplets. This is
intended to keep the pesticide suspended in the air. Mainly used for flying insect control

ANNUAL - A plant that completes its life cycle in one year.

ANTAGONISM - the reduction of pesticide activity when two or more different pesticides
are mixed together.

antibiotic - Chemical produced by a microorganism that is toxic to other microorganisms.
Examples: streptomycin, cycloheximide and penicillin.

ANTICOAGULANT - a chemical that prevents norinal blood clotting: the active ingredient
in some rodenticides.

ANTI-FOAMING AGENTS - adjuvant that is added to a tank mix to prevent the spraymix
from foaming in the tank.

ANTI-SIPHONING DEVICE - attachment designed to prevent backflow of a pesticide mix
from a spray or holding tank into a water source.

ANTI-TRANSPIRANT - chemical applied to a plant to reduce the rate or transpiration or
water loss

ARACHNID - a wingless arthropod with two body regions and four pairs of jointed legs.
Ex: Spiders, ticks and mites

ARTHROPOD - an invertebrate animal characterized by a jointed body and limbs, and
usually a hard body covering that is molted at intervals. Ex: Insects, mites and crayfish

ATROPINE - An antidote used to treat organophosphate and carbamate poison-ing.

Avicide - a chemical umed to kill or repel birds

BAND APPLICATION - application of a pesticide or other material in or beside a crop now
rather than over the entire field area

BASAL APPLICATION - Application to plant steins or trunks at or just above the ground
line.

BIENNIAL - A plant that completes its life cycle within two years
