Lesson Plan
The lesson plan is titled “Analyzing Themes in Literature.” The grade level will be the
7th grade, in the context of English Language Arts (ELA). For the objective, students will
analyze themes in literature by identifying and explaining evidence from texts. The content
standards are as follows, “CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.7.2: Determine a theme or central idea of
a text and analyze its development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary of
the text.” (California Department of Education, 2013, pg. 47). The duration of the lesson will be
90 minutes.
Instructional Materials
Tiered texts will include the following:
Advanced: Excerpts from "A Raisin in the Sun" by Lorraine Hansberry.
On-level: "The House on Mango Street" by Sandra Cisneros.
Struggling: "American Born Chinese" (graphic novel) by Gene Luen Yang.
Following will be instructional materials all students will use.
, Theme analysis graphic organizers.
Digital devices for online research and creation.
Art supplies for visual projects.
Recording equipment for multimedia presentations.
Activity Description
In the introduction, for the first 10 minutes, the teacher will explain the concept of theme
and its importance in literature. Next will be reading and analysis for roughly 30 minutes.
Students read their assigned texts and use graphic organizers to identify themes and supporting
evidence. Next will follow with a group discussion for twenty minutes. Students share findings
