Establishing Professional Presence to Promote a Healthy Work Environment
Respect, confidence, integrity, optimism, passion and empathy are key qualities needed
to establish a professional presence (Nova Scotia College of Nursing, 2018). Utilizing these
qualities effective nurse leaders can strive to create a healthy work environment. Healthy work
environments are formed with a foundation of trust, skilled communication, and ability to handle
difficult situations with integrity (Kupperschmidt et al., 2010).
Using Each SEI Power Skill to Manage Difficult Workplace Situations
Self-awareness
Becoming self-aware is not an easy task. According to Dr. Tasha Eurich, self-awareness
is the ability to see oneself clearly (TED,2017). To achieve this is rare and requires honest self-
reflection. Being self-aware allows a leader to identify their weaknesses. When we can do that
we can work on them, or step down in a situation as we identify it as another’s strength. An

difficult patient that has a history of sexually abusing others. If you know that you have
discriminations to that due to an event in your past, you can communicate the need for help with
this difficult patient. By doing so you can make the unit safer as well as show the respect to
another by acknowledging their strengths that you see.

n.d.). We do this by learning to be resilient and motivated. Great leaders can take initiatives and
being able to handle the stress effectively. In practice a situation may arise that requires you to
recover quickly as you have other responsibilities. For instance if you are working in fast pace
ED and have a trauma come in that unfortunately doesn’t make it. In the immediate instance
