Topic
The topic for this research study is the use of small group mathematic instruction
to help increase student achievement scores. Mathematics is a fundamental skill in a
students learning, and is taught and emphasised one throughout K-12. A strong
knowledge of small group skills will allow students to meet their academic goals and
develop their mathematical skills appropriately.
Problem Statement
Being a first grade teacher, each year, I am given a new group of students who
have diverse starting points in mathematics. However, a number of students come into
my classroom performing below grade level in mathematics, or are not making the
necessary gains throughout the year. Due to this problem, my purpose behind this topic
would be to provide students with a small group instruction to help / assist with the
learning and retaining of mathematical content.
Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this study is to determine the impact small group math instruction
has on student achievement scores. Closing this gap between lower achieving students
and on target students early on will be beneficial for them in grades to follow. This small
group instruction will also be tailored to meet the needs of the individual students.
