Task 3: Increasing Understanding and Knowledge Retention
Learning as a Science — D186

A. 1. Lesson Elements
Subject: ELA
Grade level: 6th grade
Objective: Students will identify and analyze key literary elements—such as theme,
conflict, setting, and plot.

A. 2. Drawing to Improve Learning
I can use drawing to improve learning and understanding of literary elements
by having students incorporate drawing into their work. When learning about conflict
within a story, I can have students participate in creating a comic strip to show the
development of the conflict. This will help students deepen their understanding of the
conflict in the story by allowing them to interpret the progression the way they
visualize it. According to DeHart (2023), reading and creating a comic strip can
improve students' critical thinking, and understanding, and help extend their thinking.

A. 3. Questioning to Improve Learning

, I can use many questioning techniques in my lesson to promote deep learning
and understanding of literary elements. Some techniques I can use include
open-ended questions, pausing after asking questions to allow students to think
before responding, and asking follow-up questions. When reading a story, asking
students open-ended questions about the characters will help students understand
the character development. Allowing time for students to think before answering will
ensure that students formulate a response that shows their understanding. As Corley
and Rauscher (2023, para. 2) state “When teachers ask higher‐order questions and
give students opportunities to develop deep explanations, learning is enhanced
across content areas.” When using these strategies, students will develop a deeper
understanding of the learning object enabling them to retain information more
successfully.
