, MNM2614 ASSIGNMENT 2 2025
Read the Neno Sanitary Pads case study: Niewenhuizen, C. 2023. Business cases from South
African companies. 2nd edition. Cape Town: Juta.
QUESTION 1
Discuss the three (3) broad types of product brands and provide examples for each. Then
justify the type of product brand Neno would be classified as based on the case study. (5)
i. Manufacturer/national brand: This type of brand is owned by the producer or
manufacturer of the product (Niewenhuizen, 2023). The manufacturer is responsible
for branding, marketing, and distributing the product, often across a wide geographic
area, hence national brand. Examples provided include Cadbury milk chocolate, AB
Inbev's individual brands like Castle Lager or Hansa Pilsener, or family brands like the
Coca-Cola range (Coca-Cola, Coke Light, Coke Zero). Manufacturer brands can be
marketed in various ways, such as an individual brand, a family brand, a company name
with an individual brand name, or a company name with the name of the product range
according to Bothma and Machado (2018).
ii. Retailer brand: Also referred to as a dealer brand, store brand, house brand, or private
brand, this occurs when a retailer buys a product from a manufacturer and brands it as
its own (Kotler & Keller, 2016). The consumer typically does not know who the actual
manufacturer is. Examples include Woolworths' own-branded products, Pick n Pay no
name branded products, and products under the Spar brand. An example given in the
study guide's feedback is Spar fish.
iii. Generic brand: These are low-cost products that have no identifiable branding. They
are usually packed in plain packaging and labelled only with the product type or
category, such as a box of tissues simply labelled Tissues. Generic brands often use
lower quality ingredients and have lower packaging and promotional costs, targeting
price-conscious consumers (Paul, 2020). Other examples include basic foodstuffs like
bread, salt, and sugar, as well as generic medicines.
Case application
Neno is a trading name for Yesizwe (Pty) Ltd, a business established in 2017 and is 100% black
women owned. Neno focuses on providing affordable sanitary pads and private label products.
The brand aims to address challenges related to access to sanitary pads, particularly in rural
areas. Neno pads are distributed through numerous retail outlets nationwide across South
Africa. Major chains that stock Neno include Clicks, Spar, Shoprite, and Makro.
