A. Value-Based Care
Three Components of Value-Based Care
Three components of value-based care are efficient, equitable, and patient-centered care.
Efficient care includes preventing waste, whether materials, equipment, medications, or time.
Equitable care would ensure all patients are treated equally and receive equal care regardless of
ethnicity, gender, age, or socioeconomic status. Patient-centered care means ensuring care is
appropriate for the individual patient's concerns, needs, and values while including the patient in
the care decisions (Six Domains of Health Care Quality, 2022).
B. Culture of Continuous Quality Improvement
Two Benefits of Continuous Quality Improvement
The benefits of Continuous Quality are improved patient satisfaction and safety.
According to an article by Comfere et al., (2020) patients do not like waste; the biggest waste for
a patient is their time. They do not care for the wait times and delays in healthcare. Some waiting
is unavoidable, such as time for laboratory testing, but the unknown time of how long before
seeing a care provider is a common issue and causes patient dissatisfaction. Patient safety was a
major concern in the 1900’s. In the article, “Continuous Quality Improvement” by Brian
O’Donnell and Vikas Gupta (2023), a report ran by the Institute of Medicine shows the impact of
healthcare errors. After some implementation of continuous quality improvement projects, a
decrease in medical errors was noted, thus increasing patient safety.
WGU Nursing Programs Conceptual Model Elements
Effective communication is a vital component to advancing continuous quality
improvement. The advanced practice nurse communicates with many individuals, from patients
and their family members to other members of the healthcare team. Communicating effectively
and efficiently will help patients feel that their care and time are a priority to the advanced
practice nurse. Also, the advanced practice nurse will demonstrate safety and quality care to their
patients. This includes reducing the threat of injury to the population being served. Also, care
quality is measured in other aspects, including cost and process.
Systematic Process of Quality Improvement
One systematic process used in healthcare for continuous quality improvement is Lean.
Lean is intended to reduce and eliminate waste to increase the patient's perception of value. A
few different tools may be used in the Lean model. 5S is the most common tool for Lean. Just as
