UGA HIST 2112 TEST 1 well answered to
pass graded A+

Fourteenth Amendment - correct answer ✔✔Background: After the end of the
Civil War Americans were faced with the question regarding what do about the
effects of the emancipation. The presidential reconstruction ideal was to make it
nearly as easy as possible to rejoin the union. When the south responded to this
hospitality by instituting the Black Codes, congress was not so lenient by
instituting the reconstruction acts of 1867 which allowed for military occupation
of the south and the passing the 14th amendment.

Effect: Gave freed slaves and other people born in the U.S citizenship. Leads to the
compromise of 1877 which withdrew federal troops in the south, ending the
period of reconstruction.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1)This was adopted by congress July 9th, 1868 as one of the Reconstruction
Amendments to address citizenship rights and equal protection of the laws, and
was proposed in response to issues related to former slaves following the
American Civil War.
2) It stated that every person born or naturalized in the U.S was considered a
citizen (gave citizenship to blacks) and would be protected by the constitution
through due process.
3) Direct response to "Black Codes" in south.
4) forced states to allow blacks to vote or their state would not carry as many
votes.
5) Confederates could not become a senator or representative in congress.

Sharecropping - correct answer ✔✔Background: Major economic concerns such
regarding recovery, labor force, and loss of capital were left unanswered after the
civil war. Slave owners were forced to give away what was considered a major
asset with no reimbursement. Freed slaves were left to find jobs and provide for
themselves with little financial or personal support. Overall, most slaves were still
dependent on heir owners even after emancipation.

Effect: Slaves and poor white people were forced into an arguably worse economic
position where they continued accumulated debt due to poor agricultural
conditions exacerbated by the broken credit system between the sharecroppers
and land owners.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) Economic response to the emancipation of slave
2) often resulted in the sharecropper forever staying in debt to the person lending
the tools and can never get ahead to make a profit.
2) "Virtual Slavery"
3) Failed economic reconstruction in south after war

we just took away from their owners?

Effect: The order failed however this was the first step to solving one of the main
concerns of the reconstruction period to follow.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) orders given to divide southern lands occupied by Sherman and his troops
during his march to savannah in the civil war.
2) was the basis for the "40 acres and a mule" for each black slave
3) one of the first examples of reconstruction strategy and raised the question of
what to do with freed black slaves after the war
