Monomers and Polymers
Biological Molecules
, Monomers and Polymers: What the specification Says
What the specification
says:
=> the variety of life, both past and present, is extensive, but the biochemical basis of life is similiar for all
living things
=> monomers are the small units from which larger molecules are made
=> polymers are molecules made from a larger number of monomers joined together
=> monosaccharides, amino acids and nucleotides are examples of monomers
=> a condensation reaction joints two molecules together with the formation of a chemiocal bond and
involves the elimintation of a molecule of water
=> a hydrolysis reaction breaks a chemical bond between two molecuels and involves the use of a water
molecule
Summary of what you need to know:
1. definition of monomer
2. definition of polymer
3. examples of monomers
4. examples of polymers
5. definition of condensation reaction
6. definition of hydrolysis reaction
