Ethics and Multicultural Competencies Worksheet
1. I think Sue, Arrendondo, and McDavis are worried because counselors don't get the training they
need to deal with multicultural perspectives in the field. According to Sue, Arredondo, &
McDavis (1992), "the serious lack and inadequacy of training programs in dealing with racial,
ethnic, and cultural matters" has been noted at "numerous conferences held by the American
Association for Counseling and Development (AACD), the American Psychological Association
(APA), and other government-sponsored events. “Because of the varying worldviews and cultural
diversity of various ethnic groups, I believe the article's warnings and recommendations are
justified. According to Sue, Arredondo, and McDavis (1992), "white middle-class value systems
are often reflected in counseling and social psychological research regarding racial and ethnic
minorities. “This is significant because it can be misinterpreted and interpreted as unrelated to the
issues at hand for various ethnicities, which creates a serious conflict in the counseling that is
provided to people of various cultures.

2. Competencies and Standards for Multicultural Counseling: The four groups that are referred to in
this article as the multicultural competencies are: Asian Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanics,
and Latinos, and African Americans. While these are the visible racial and ethnic minority
groups, multicultural counseling would also include women, gays, lesbians, and other special
populations.

3. The United States' increasing diversity is one justification for a multicultural perspective. We
now live in a society that is multi-cultural and includes people from all over the world, including
racial and ethnic minorities, because of the diversity. White Americans are experiencing a
decline in fertility and birthrates. Women and members of racial and ethnic minorities make up
75% of those entering the workforce today. As a result, the majority of those contributing to
social security will be minorities. Our multicultural competence must adapt to the changing
society in which we live. The monoculture nature of training is yet another justification.
Professionals are failing to acknowledge that race, culture, and ethnicity are functions of every
individual—not just minorities—even in graduate programs. The lack of cultural competence in
this field can be attributed to the fact that cultural competence is not given a lot of attention
during education. Sociopolitical reality comes in last. We must acknowledge that counseling is a
profession that reflects society. Democratic concepts like "equal access to opportunity" and
"pursuit of happiness" are reflected in the notion that a counselor should be of assistance.
Generally, it is basic to take a proactive position in consolidating stands of training that mirror
the variety of society.

4. According to Sue (1992), "professionals that work with clients from diverse cultural
backgrounds without proper training or competence in working with these clients are unethical,
potentially harmful, and a violation of human rights." This is one of the ethical considerations for
working with multicultural clients. Because monoculturalism creates an invisible veil that
prevents people from seeing counseling as a biased system, it is difficult to convince the
profession of the
