Explain why employers need to keep records of accidents, incidents and emergencies.

The main reason why employers must keep records of accidents is because of the law regulation
RIDDOR. The legislation RIDDOR states that you must always record any accidents, incidents and
emergencies that has taken place in the workplace and must keep these records. Furthermore, if the
HSE inspectors come to check the health and safety of the workplace, they will look at their previous
records of accidents, incidents, and emergencies. This will give them an idea on how the workplace
are current trying to reduce of the same accidents to happen again. In addition, it will help the
employer from reducing the risk because, it happened previously so by recording it he will know
what steps to take to prevent this type of risk to happen again.

When keeping records of incidents, the person must be a competent person. This is because a
competent person has the information, experience, knowledge and good number of skills, which
allows this person to report and keep records of accidents. This competent must take out a risk
assessment if they meet the above. This means that this competent person can either serve as a
supervisor and work manger.

When recording accidents in workplaces, it can influence cost. This is because if there has been an
accident in the workplace, the employer will be charged by court. This means the employer will need
to pay court fees and pay any fines which has been given to him. Furthermore, the worker might
make a claim on the employer which means the employer is losing more money. If the worker is
injured the worker will need to pay for any treatment that needs to take place such as transport to
the hospital and back, and first aid treatment. The employer must improve safety on the workplace
after an accident has occurred, if a person had an accident with an equipment the employer must
make that equipment more safter to prevent accidents. This will cost money because if the
equipment was faulty, the equipment must be replaced or repaired which could cost a lot of money.
If a record is kept the employer can review all the previous accidents allowing the employer to make
sure those accidents don’t happen again. This therefore allows the employer to spend little on any
fines, as he would be keeping the risk low.

Trends

This record of accidents must be kept because the longer you keep this record, a trend will be made.
This will make it easier for the employer to see how much accidents are happening and allowing
them to prevent this risk or reducing them. Furthermore, it will allow the employers to see if there
has been an increase of accidents or if there has been a decrease of incidents. After a 12-month
period, the employer can view this trend and the employer is able to see which accident is most
frequent and therefore can see why they are frequent therefore trying to prevent these from
happening.

7 examples of accidents or occurrences which must be reported.

Amputation to any part of the body

Dislocation of shoulder, hip knee, or spine

Unconsciousness caused by asphyxia or exposure to a harmful substance

Explosion, collapse or bursting of any closed vessel or associated pipework

Accidental release of any substance which may damage health
