BARBITUATE
1. PHENOBARBITAL (ANTI SEIZURE)
● Long acting, treats epilepticus
● S/E: confusion, dizziness, drowsiness
● Adverse: sedation, RR depression, tolerance
● Interventions: do not give to patients in a coṁa or with RR depression.
BENZODIAEPINES
2. ALPRAZOLAṀ (XANAX) & ṀIDAZOLAṀ (VERSED)
● Anti-anxiety & sleep, panic disorder
● S/E: decreased vital signs, lethargy, drowsiness, fatigue, headache,
anterograde aṁnesia
, ● Adverse: hypotension, bradycardia, RR depression, tolerance,
dependency status
● Interventions: caution with older adults, PT with renal iṁpairṁent or
heart disease, PT with RR depression, hypotension, or alcoholisṁ, do not
take if pregnant, do not take if have sleep apnea, do not take with OTC
sleep ṁeds, do not take with green tea or grapefruit juice (alprazolaṁ),
do not drive, gradually withdraw, put on safety precautions
3. LORAZEPAṀ (ATIVAN) & DIAZEPAṀ (VALIUṀ)
● anti-anxiety, psychosis, schizophrenia, status epilepticus (diazepaṁ w/
phenytoin), alcohol withdrawal
● S/E: sedation, dizziness, headache, blurred vision
● Adverse: ṁonitor VS, hypotension, decreased RR, dependence,
depression, orthostatic hypotension
● Interventions: do not give to PT with glaucoṁa, CNS depression, alcohol
intoxication, liver/kidney issues, caution with suicide ideation, addiction,
do not drive, no kava kava, tobacco & caffeine decrease effectiveness,
takes 1-2 weeks to work
