Leadership Experience
Rather than assigning tasks and deadlines, strong leaders collaborate with their team to
accomplish goals and meet deadlines. I try to keep this in mind each time I lead a team. Upon
achieving a promotion into an Administrative Assistant role, the first big project I was assigned
was leading a team to achieve a quality assurance accreditation for our organization that provides
support to individuals with developmental disabilities. When I accepted this role, I was unaware
that it came with leadership responsibilities. I did not have any previous leadership experience
before this assignment, so learning how to become an effective leader and support this team to
achieve this accreditation was a process that I had to learn as I went. Before I could take any
action, I needed to identify what I wanted my leadership style to be. I decided that I wanted to
have a supportive leadership style and I wanted to not just assign work to my team, but I wanted
to work with them to create a plan towards achieving our overall goal and collaborate with the
team and motivate them to achieve these goals.
Once I identified my leadership style, it was time to select a team that would be
composed of a collaborative group of folks who would work towards achieving the overall
organizational goal. I began by reviewing the requirements for achieving accreditation. Based on
this information, I selected a robust group of subject matter experts who I felt would be great
collaborators and contributors toward meeting the requirements and achieving accreditation. I
choose team members who can tackle complex issues, come up with creative solutions, and work
together to achieve goals more rapidly. Each group member was carefully selected as I knew
their contributions would be essential in achieving accreditation. Once I had selected the right
group of folks to support in carrying out this initiative, it was time to get to work.
