Welding is a material joining process that fuses two materials by
heating each to a suitable temperature with or without the addition of
filler metal. Metals to be joined are brought to their melting point
under an inert atmosphere by the heat generated from an electric arc.
The molten weld pool then solidifies, representing a unique
heterogeneous structure formulated from the two base metals and the
filler metal.

, Residual stresses are due to the manufacturing processes that leave stresses in a
material. Welding also leaves residual stresses in the metals that are welded
together.

Compressive stress is the opposite of tensile stress, in that adjacent parts of a
material press against each other through a typical stress plane.

- Increase strength and/or hardness
- Enhance ductility
- Increase corrosion resistance
- Enhance strength and/or machinability
- Increase wear resistance

Referred to in quoting the "strength" of a material and is always qualified by the type
of stress, such as tensile strength, compressive strength, or shear strength.
