I passed TEFL level 5 in May 2020 with a good mark. I hope that these assignments work as good guidelines. Best of luck.

Assignment C

Assignment C, Part 1 - An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced

Use the checklist from unit 10 ('Evaluating course book material') to write a general
evaluation of the book - you won't be able to comment on all items as you only have one
unit and the contents, but say as much as you can.
This must be presented as a coherent essay, not just a list.

Then say whether you personally would like to use the book with an advanced class and
why or why not - this is just your opinion, so there is not a right or a wrong response to
this part. You do not need to refer to the class described for part 2 of this assignment.

300 - 500 words

‘Cutting Edge’ would be a considered course material in an advanced class. One of the first
reasons I would choose ‘Cutting Edge’ would be that the material is attractively presented.
The course book has a clear structure of material and it also offers many opportunities to
practice all aspects of the language which are reading, writing, listening and speaking. The
text is very clearly written and at an appropriate level for advanced speakers. I also find the
content appropriate, interesting and most importantly, I like that it is multicultural,
considering the fact that the class would be a multicultural class in an ESL class
environment. The activities in the books encourages the students to work individually and
in groups.

One of the first things that caught my eye on ‘Cutting Edge’ at first was the way the
material was presented. The material is attractively presented to promote interest in the
learners. It has a variety of pictures related to the title of ‘Global Living’. Pictures of global
cities, which is related to the topic. Vivid images appeal to students, so the fact that the
book presents many pictures will help the learners have mental images of the content and
vocabulary that they will be learning. Another thing I liked about the presentation is that
there are realistic images of people with various professions as in the pictures of people
and descriptions on pages 12-13. They are diverse in nationality and in their types of
professions. This mirrors the diversity of people all over the world learning English and how
global the language is. It will also emphasise the importance of knowing English in
whichever career path they choose to follow. The book speaks of people of various
nationalities and I like the sense of multiculturalism it gives It is all clearly structured in the
sense that it first presents the vocabulary that will be taught in the main text of the unit. It
then goes to reading activities, followed by grammar, listening and writing activities. I also
found that the activities offered give the students a variety opportunities to practice the
language components of reading, writing , listening and speaking while still enhancing
their interest on the content. The activities encourage the students to work individually
