One of the five elements of emotional intelligence is self-awareness. Explain what it means to be self-
aware and describe why emotional intelligence is crucial for effective leadership. Discuss what
behaviors someone with a high degree of self-awareness would demonstrate within the context of
leading and managing groups. Provide an example.
Initial discussion question posts should be a minimum of 200 words and include at least two
references cited using APA format. Responses to peers or faculty should be 100-150 words and
include one reference. Refer to "RN-BSN Discussion Question Rubric" and "RN-BSN Participation
Rubric," located in Class Resources, to understand the expectations for initial discussion question
posts and participation posts, respectively.
We are all unique individuals with differing wants, needs, and methods of expressing
emotions. To be successful in our work and our ability to relate to others we must have the
ability to determine how to manage ourselves and others. This is emotional intelligence (EI).
Emotional intelligence (EI) is how we understand and manage emotions and how we recognize
our own emotions and the emotions of others (Boyatzis & McKee, 2005). “An emotionally
intelligent leader can stimulate and foster innovative behaviors among their team” (Butler, 2021,
p. 19). Self-awareness is arguably the most important characteristic as it relates to emotional
intelligence. Self-awareness is the ability to know yourself, understand your emotions and
feelings, strengths and limitations. Self-awareness is to be aware of your reactions, tendencies,
and responses. With a high level of self-awareness, you will be self-confident in your worth and
capabilities (Boyatzis & McKee, 2005). “Characteristics of a self-aware leader are transparency,
resilience, and accountability” (Butler, 2021, p. 19). Leaders with high self-awareness establish
relationships, create positive work culture, communicate, and are empathetic to their staff
(Butler, 2021).
In my time as a nurse, I have had a few different leaders from assistant managers up to
directors. The ones that were not successful and are not supported by their team are the ones who
aware and describe why emotional intelligence is crucial for effective leadership. Discuss what
behaviors someone with a high degree of self-awareness would demonstrate within the context of
leading and managing groups. Provide an example.
