Topic 7: Socioeconomic Status Worksheet
1. In your own words, define the meaning of socioeconomic status (SES) in the
United States. Respond in 50 to 100 words.

Socioeconomic status (SES) is a monetary and social joined all out proportion of an
individual's monetary and social situation comparable to other people, in light of
pay, schooling, and occupation; However, the more common use of SES is to
illustrate societal economic disparity. In most cases, the three levels of
socioeconomic status—high, middle, and low—are used to describe the three places
a family or individual may fall in relation to others. Researchers have recently
shown a growing interest in the relationship between economic inequality and
population health. First and foremost, socioeconomic status (SES) is a concept that
refers to a person's or a group of people's social and economic background. As it is
founded on the premise that all societies have an uneven status structure, the
sociological notion addresses relative position within a specific social system. It
often contains learned traits, as opposed to biological ones, like age or ethnicity. It
can contain demographic information at the household level, such as residency. It is
a construct made to aggregate contextually relevant, statistically significant, and
valid indicators into composite indicators, single indicators or variables, or even a
single proxy variable. “Low-socioeconomic-status (SES) consumers tend to be more
price sensitive than their high-SES counterparts.” Jacob, J., Vieites, Y.,
Goldszmidt, R., & Andrade, E. B. (2022).

2. In your own words, define cultural norms and discuss how norms may differ
between SES groups in the United States. Respond in 50 to 100 words.

The distinction is due to cultural standards. A group's views and behavioral
tendencies are referred to as its "culture." The term "Norm" describes attitudes
and actions that are seen as typical, average, or normal within that group. There
are cultural norms in every society. Even though we are often unaware that we are
influenced in any way, norms have an impact on every aspect of our lives, including
what we value, our attitudes, and how we act. Social and cultural norms are
guidelines or standards of conduct and cognition that are based on accepted values
