Logical Fallacies Quiz
(Questions and
Answers)
begging the question - -The judge is assuming the answer to the very
question that a trial is supposed to answer.

- Appeal to pity - -I really deserve an "A" on this paper, professor. Not only
did I study during my grandmother's funeral, but I also passed up the heart
transplant surgery, even though that was the first matching donor in three
years.

- Red herring - -Mike: It is morally wrong to cheat on your spouse; why on
earth would you have done that?
Ken: But what is morality, exactly?
Mike: It's a code of conduct shared by cultures.
Ken: But who creates this code?

- begging the question - -The arguer assumes that standard English is
necessary only for certain kinds of employment, but that remains to be
proved. Standard English has other uses unrelated to employment.

- false cause - -I eat bananas for a snack every day. One day I skipped my
banana and my car was broken into. I have not skipped a day of banana-
snacking since.

- slippery slope - -If we enact any kind of gun control laws, the next thing
you know, we won't be allowed to have any guns at all. When that happens,
we won't be able to defend ourselves against terrorist attacks, and when that
happens terrorists will take over our country. Therefore, gun control laws will
cause us to lose our country to terrorists.

- appeal to pity - -Boss: You were late for work again. This is becoming a
habit. I am going to have to write you up.
Employee: Please don't write me up. If you do, I'll get fired, I'll lose my
house, and I'll have no way to feed my family!

- Double standard - -Husband: I forbid you to go to that male strip club!
That is a completely inappropriate thing for a wife to do!
Wife: What about when you went to the female strip club last year?
