, BPM lifecycle
Unless continuously adapted and improved “every good process eventually becomes a bad
process”, therefore BPM is seen as continuous cycle consisting of the following phases:
• Identification, the business problem is identified,
and goals are formulated subsequently the process
architecture is formulated and relevant processes are
identified and scoped accordingly.
• Discovery, the as-is process is modeled in the form
of process models.
• Analysis, issues within the as-is process are
identified and documented in a structured collection
of issues prioritized based on their potential impact
and required effort.
• Redesign, changes that might contribute to solving
the issues from the analysis phase are weighted
against the objectives. The best options are
implemented into a new and improved to-be process
model.
• Implementation, the changes that are needed to
move from the as-is process to the to-be process are
prepared and performed. This may include
organizational changes management and
automation, the latter can be achieved using RPA.
• Monitoring, once the to-be process is implemented
and running relevant data is collected and analyzed
to determine bottlenecks, this act is referred to as
process mining. This may lead to new issues, which
retriggers the cycle.

Process identification
Process checklist
Not every chunk of work that is frequently repeated can be considered a business process on its
own. A true business process must align with the following questions:
• Is it a process at all?
Processes consist of a main action that is applied to a category of cases like “Approve
leave request”. Another way to verify this is to check if the process outcome results in, in
this case “Approved leave requests”.
• Can the process be controlled?
For series of events to be considered a business process they will need to be repetitive
in nature rather than a unique endeavor, these would be better off as projects.
