See interpretations C and D on p33.
Use the guidance provided to write answers to the two questions below;
1) How does Interpretation C differ from Interpretation D about Weimar art? (4)
¶ What does interpretation C claim was positive about Weimar Art? Select a quote to show
this.
¶ What does interpretation D claim was negative about Weimar Art? Select a quote to show
this.
¶ Summarise in a sentence what is therefore different about the views of interpretation C and
D.
Interpretation C claims Weimar Art was positive because foreigners who came to
Berlin were ‘excited by it and didn’t want to leave’, and that the ‘atmosphere
was electric’ portraying Weimar art to be desirable, enjoyable and fun for
everyone. On the other hand, Interpretation D claims that Weimar Art has ‘led to
chaos’ and ‘encourages subversion’, presenting it as unruly and too
experimental. In summary, while Interpretation C embraces the liveliness and
vivacity of Weimar Art, Interpretation D is almost disgusted by it and would
prefer for things to return to pre-WW1 Germany.
2) Why might the authors of Interpretations C and D have a different interpretation about
Weimar art? (4)
¶ Why would a German poet living in Berlin want to praise the impact of Weimar art?
¶ Why would the Professor of an established art school not like the changes which had been
taking place in the 1920s?
¶ Summarise in a sentence the reasons for the different interpretations.
A German poet living in Berlin may want to praise the impact of Weimar art as
this person has now been freed from the restriction placed on his poetry when
the Kaiser reigned; now he is free to write whatever he wants. Additionally, living
in the midst of Berlin where the majority is enjoying themselves, may influence
others to accept this way of life as well. However, a Professor of an established
art school may not like the changes because the new style of Weimar Art is
probably very different from what they had been taught previously. As a result,
the art school could be losing out on students, as more gravitate towards the
new Weimar art style – which could impact this person financially also. In
conclusion, while a German poet would benefit from the freedom permitted
through Weimar art, an art school professor may be unsettled by it and unable to
adapt to the new and experimental changes being made.
