Topic 8 DQ 1
Describe the role of health care research in promoting continuous improvement in health
care organizations. Discuss the parameters of using health care research to make changes
or decisions in a health care environment or organization.
In a world of continuously changing business environments, organizations have no option;
however, to deal with such a big level of transformation in order to adjust the consequential
demands. Therefore, many companies need to continually improve and review their processes to
maintain their competitive advantages in an uncertain environment. Healthcare Organization
leaders have a well-thought out and well-researched business plan because they want to make
decisions based on facts. Every business decision has an element of risk involved; thus, the
function of business research exists to help business leaders evaluate scenarios and make better
moves. Business research gives a company the required data, innovative ideas and new products
to stay competitive. Efforts to improve quality need to be measured to demonstrate whether
improvement efforts lead to change in the primary end point in the desired direction, contribute
to unintended results in different parts of the system, and require additional efforts to bring a
process back into acceptable ranges.

While health outcomes data can be used to improve almost any area of health care, there are
some common ways that health executives are currently applying research findings to help their
organizations. Research can be used as a framework to evaluate internal operations and to
identify areas that could benefit from improvement. In addition, outcomes measures can provide
a convenient way to monitor changes and evaluate their effectiveness. It can also be used to
evaluate patient responses to a variety of factors, such as satisfaction with their provider’s
expertise, bedside manner, and communication skills. It’s also important to measure patient
satisfaction with the health care facility itself, exploring details such as wait time and perception
of cleanliness. Does this apply to all part of a healthcare organization?

Prof. Matson,
In addition to business research, many healthcare administrators use tools for quality monitoring
and continuous improvement such as the most widely used tools for the continuous improvement
method the plan-do-check-act (PDCA) cycle. Other widely used methods of continuous
improvement, such as Six Sigma, lean, and total quality management, emphasize employee
involvement and teamwork, work to measure and systematize processes, and reduce variation,
defects, and cycle times. I wonder if business researchers use the same methods or are just based
entirely on just data collection?
