The psychology of coaching is fundamentally a group of strategies that are developed to assist the coaches to increase their ability to influence the behaviour of players efficiently. You are required to interact with a coach over a period. It can either be a team or individual sport coach. You must go through various stages of the project which also include reading prescribed and recommended readings. Thereafter, you are required to compile a report about your experience with a coach. The main purpose of this assignment is to introduce you to the working context of a sport psychologist and the academic literature on sport psychology and coaching. Section A: Initial Contact(s) with the Coach

For this project, I interacted with Coach Daniel, who has been coaching a local under-16
soccer team for the past five years. He has a background in sports science and a strong
passion for youth development. We first met at the team’s training ground, a small but
lively community field, on a Wednesday afternoon. It was a busy environment, with
young players warming up and chatting excitedly while waiting for practice to begin.

During our initial conversation, I introduced myself, explained the purpose of my project,
and asked if he would be open to collaborating. He was very welcoming and seemed
intrigued by the idea of having someone analyze his coaching methods and provide
feedback. We discussed his coaching philosophy, the challenges he faces, and areas
where he would like to improve. He mentioned that while he has good technical
knowledge of soccer, he sometimes struggles with motivating players who lose
confidence after mistakes. Additionally, he finds it difficult to manage the different
personality types within the team.

I observed the training session and noted that Coach Daniel had a commanding yet
approachable presence. He gave clear instructions and frequently encouraged the
players, but at times, frustration showed when some players did not perform as
expected. After practice, we had a follow-up chat where I summarized my observations
and asked if he would be interested in learning about psychological techniques that
could enhance his coaching effectiveness. He was very receptive and eager to explore
new methods to support his players better.
