Content preview

SEPARATE POST: (DOES NOT REQUIRE PEER REPLIES) DUE SUNDAY at end of week 2
Reflect upon your current or most recent clinical practice and
answer the following:

1.How is informatics used?
2.Regarding the Pre-TANIC Self-Assessment for this
week, how did your perceived competency level prior
to the self-assessment compared to after the self-
assessment? Explain in detail.
3.What TWO competencies do you use in your current clinical
role?
Provide examples.
4.Identify TWO resources to develop a strategic plan
to enhance your competency skills.
5.Which resources are suited to your needs
and why? 6.How do you intend to enact
this improvement plan?

1. To me, informatics is a fancy word for acts that we do every day. Humans utilize
informatics in their daily life, work life, and in society. Informatics is the act utilizing,
understanding, and processing data (Hunter, 2013). Social media is a common example
of a type of informatics, most people in society utilize some form of social media and
either post their own data/media such as pictures, status updates, or videos as well as
navigate the sites. In terms of my clinical practice in nursing, I utilize informatics every
day as a bedside nurse. Every time I sit down at a computer at work and open a
patient’s
chart, I am utilizing technology to upload, process, and input data, which then is utilized
by other members of the healthcare team to make clinical decisions for patients.
2. Regarding the pre-TANIC self-assessment, I perceived myself as highly competent in
computer literacy prior to taking the assessment. As a millennial, who grew up around
computers, I’ve often been the person who taught others around me how to work
with computers and how to recognize what data is safe and what data seems corrupt.
After taking the pre-TANIC self-assessment, I rated myself as an expert at most of the
competencies which aligned with my prior perception that I am highly competent in
terms of basic computer literacy and understanding.
3. In my current role as a bedside, critical care, nurse, I utilize informatics and computer
literacy to access the electronic health record (EHR), Epic, my professional work email,
and other clinical tools such as our communication software (Perfect Serve),
educational materials (Up to Date), and utilize web browsing to search for patient
pharmacies, funeral homes, and consult numbers. I also utilize clinical information
management, so that I can view and interpret lab results, vital signs, provider orders,
and access the electronic medication administration record (EMAR). I believe most
bedside nurses, especially in critical care units utilize the competencies of clinical
information management (Zareshahi, 2022). I rely on clinical information management
to properly do my job and report findings to other members of the interdisciplinary
team, like physicians, and midlevel providers, so that patients can receive the most up
to date and highest quality care possible.
