Polar regions – areas of permanent ice. (i.e. Antarctica or Greenland).
Periglacial (tundra)- edge of permanent ice. Permanently frozen ground
(permafrost) includes Alaska.
Alpine – mountain areas, (i.e. European alps, high altitude results in cold
conditions)
Glacial – found at edges of ice sheets, and mountainous regions such as
Himalayas.
Glacial budget:
This is a balance between the inputs (accumulation) and the outputs (ablation) if
the accumulation zone exceeds the ablation zone the glacier advances, if the
ablation zone exceeds the accumulation zone then the glacier retreats.
