Instructions
Read Fletcher and Ollie McGee's epitaphs from Spoon River Anthology and read "The Story
of an Hour." Respond to the following questions using evidence from the texts to support
your answers.
1. Spoon River Anthology
What do you know about Ollie and Fletcher McGee as individuals and as husband
and wife after reading their epitaphs? Answer the question in a paragraph of 4-6
sentences, using evidence from the text to support your response.
The wife, Ollie, feels nothing for her husband. In fact, she truly loathes him. Based on
what I read I’d say their relationship is toxic. They both end up making the other suffer
causing no real connection between them to form. This is supported by the text when
Ollie says he"robbed me of my youth and my beauty”.
2. "The Story of an Hour"
How does Mrs. Mallard feel when she thinks of her life after her husband's death?
Why does she feel this way? Answer the questions in a paragraph of at least 4
sentences, using evidence from the text to support your response.
Mrs. Mallard feels genuine relief now that her husband has passed. This is essential
because married women are treated very poorly by their husbands. This is supported
when she said, “Free! Body and soul free!".
